It was also a very cathartic game and Mafia 3 was often very fun just for the reason that it allowed players to knock down racists. Set in the 1960s, it takes an unflinching look at race relations in the American south and how protagonist Lincoln Clay, as a mixed-race Black man and a Vietnam veteran, is treated harshly by others. Mafia 3 took some bold steps, featuring an African-American protagonist in a story of revenge. It’s also unclear who would be the protagonist of Mafia 4. Hangar 13 also revealed that the “team would be thrilled to make another Mafia game if the opportunity arises.” However, it doesn’t sound as though Mafia 4 is in development now as the development team is “working on another project.” No details about this other game have been provided. Speaking to SegmentNext, Mafia: Definitive Edition developer Hangar 13 confirmed that if that game “does well,” the team “may be able to channel our energy towards a new installment.” Mafia 3 was deemed a hit after shipping five million copies in under six months, but as a re-release, it’s not known how many copies Mafia: Definitive Edition would have to sell to be thought of as a success. Mafia 4 Could Potentially Be Developed by Hangar 13 Hangar 13 also developed Mafia 3, which was publisher 2K’s fastest-selling game when it released in 2016. The developer released Mafia 2: Definitive Edition and Mafia 3: Definitive Edition in May and will release Mafia: Definitive Edition, an enhanced HD version of the first game in the series, in September.
